Gem of the Vikings: The Viking mariners used thin pieces of iolite as the world’s first polarizing filter. Looking through an iolite lens, they could determine the exact position of the sun, and navigate safely to the new world and back.

Gemological Properties- Iolite is a mineral species called cordierite by mineralogists. It is from the orthorhombic crystal system. Usually seen as light to dark blue and violet to colorless. Iolite is fairly hard, a 7 on the Moe’s Scale of Hardness. The major sources include India, Tanzania, Brazil, Sri Lanka and Madagascar.

This is a one-of-a-kind design. Each piece is unique. I let each stone "speak" to me as I lovingly craft a wire frame to securely embrace the stone. This beautiful pendant measures approximately 1-1/2" in length and 7/16" wide. The stone measures 10mm x 12mm
