The Ojo de Dios, or God’s Eye talisman is thought to have originated with the Huichol Indians of Jalisco, Mexico. The Huichol call their God’s eyes Sikuli, which means "the power to see and understand things unknown." The four points of the basic Ojo pattern represent the four elements earth, fire, water, and air. When a child is born, the central eye is woven by the father, then one eye is added for every year of the child’s life until the child reaches the age of five.
Similar hand woven artifacts have been discovered in Tibet and were often placed on the rooftops of their dwellings. In both cultures the objects were thought to provide a form of protection by keeping away evil spirits or ghosts. Similar artifacts have also been found in regions of Africa.
My father taught me to make Ojos de Dios, like this one and countless variations on the theme. Since my father’s passing earlier this year, I find myself returning to many of the crafting skills I learned from him.
This God’s Eye is made from Copper and Colored Artistic Wire in greens and purples. Accented with purple iridescent glass beads. The copper spiral hanger is hand formed and given a hand hammered texture.
Measures: 5-1/2"L x 3-1/4" W
I like to hang these from the fire place mantle. They also make great Christmas ornaments. You can even hang them from your rear view mirror.
